Advice on Living Simply

Try to live simply. A simple lifestyle freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be persuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford. Do you keep yourself informed about the effects your style of living is having on the global economy and environment? (From Quaker Advices and Queries 1.02, 41)

As ever the Society of Friends provides good advice. However, when we consider what we need, I think we should take into account our emotional and psychological needs: not just what keeps us alive, but also what makes life worth living for us. To my mind it's all about balance and finding ways to meet our needs that do not deprive others of what they need to live rather than merely survive.

More thoughts from the Quakers on living a simpler and greener lifestyle can be found in the booklet, Walk Cheerfully, Step Lightly
