Do we need a blasphemy law?

There was discussion of the blasphemy law on the radio the morning. The Evangelical person who suggested that now was not a good time to get rid of it summed up its purpose very well. He thought abolishing it would send out the wrong signal.

So we need a blasphemy law not to protect God, who is quite capable of looking after himself I should think, but to encourage people to believe in God and try to stop even more people from leaving church. Is that what laws are for? Is that really the best way to enourage faith and keep people coming to church?

How about if people in churches stopped taking the Lord's name in vain by paying mere lipservice to Jesus' teachings, and started to try to really love their neighbour as themselves and more clergy helped their congregations to start loving themselves? I wonder what that would do for church attendance.
