More Practical than Philosophy

Finally got my broadbeans into the ground today. I'd planted them in peat pots just before the end of January, which to my mind means the softening process was started in time. I use Aqua Dulce as I prefer to plant my broad beans early in the hope that I'll avoid the blackfly. Hubby hadn't quite finished preparing the beds at that stage. We haven't gone for raised beds as being on a slope the soil dries out quite quickly in dry periods, but hubby has made wooden frames to edge each bed, which should help keep the weeds at bay and reduce any erosion. He even spread compost on the middle bed for me, so all I had to do was put the pots into the ground and cover them over again, clearing away stones and sticks in the process. I had used up the packet of seed, so ended up with three and a half rows. I'm not expecting every seed to turn into a plant, but I'm hoping for a reasonable crop.

Of course I realised afterwards that peat pots aren't all that environmentally friendly, but I had these from last year. I suppose I should invest in one of those large wooden acorn thingys with a handle so that I can make similar pots from old newspaper.
